Astra Papachristodoulou – Amongst the Moriai | Abduction | Meltemic | Europa’s Tears | Thorned Crown

,

In 2000 more than a hundred poets from 43 European countries spent six weeks travelling across the continent – a working trip and reading tour through the whole of Europe. Now, twenty years on, thirteen of the poets who took part in the project have been invited to write an essayistic, poetic reworking of the myth of the “Rape of Europa”.

Amongst the Moriai

ever beneath such plenitude
at the leaves’ own myriad karpos
rich in parts of earthen verve
Europa settles; compact over myths
by the shade of new leafage
to trace the drifts of
the first sun

Abduction

one bulb of twig
tree-crown of wintry days
demeter at the margins
surprised at sunlight

white bull in form
pathos on the edges
near the bare stones
plows, then sows seeds
of saffron crocus
to capture his pray

a disguise of man
as sharp as killing
coiling into
familiar trauma

Meltemic

long ridged
hilltop, his back
she climbed
with gentleness

an out-where of sea
pebbles weave closer
an overlay of addendum
subfusc & aqueous
recounting ancient tales
and give new fields
some frightening colour

Europa’s Tears

mastic-like
glacial fall
leaf reaped
many-field
sap from bark
rock-clear
asymmetrical
brittle bits
tear drop-like
soil swept
fresh-caught
turns liquid
stays opaque
at the tip of
her tongue
resinous
bloodshed
memories

Thorned Crown

myrtle-woven
dreams
of the leaf
tremble
in the light of day

worn by woman
whose hypnos
is unrest
near
wrapped bones

her golden-mesh
wired onto stem
in the shadows
she rests on
xanthic soil
