Shamshad Abdullaev

Shamshad Abdullaev was born in 1957 and lives and works as a poet, prose writer and essayist in Fergana-Tal in Uzbekistan. He was a co-founder of the ‘Fergana School of Poetry’, a group of poets mainly writing in Russian, who combine Islamic, Central Asian and Chinese literary traditions with elements of Western post-modernism. His prizes include the Andrej Bely Prize (1993), the Globus Prize of the magazine Znamya (1998), the 2006 and 2013 Russkaja Premija, which is awarded to writers living abroad who write in Russian, the Fellowship Prize of the Joseph Brodsky Foundation (2015) and the Volga-NOS Prize of the Prokhorov Foundation (2020). In recent years he has published poetry collections including Nepodvichnaja powerchnost (Motionless Surfaces), NLO, Moscow 2003, Priblichenie okrain (The Approach of the Suburbs), NLO, Moscow 2013; Pered mestnostju (In Front of the Terrain), Argo-Risk, Moscow 2017; Drugoj Jug (The Other South), Nosorog, Moscow, 2020.
